What should the government do (if anything) about transportation?

I chose the topic thinking it would be about government financing new forms of cars/fuel, but all I can find info about is the Department of Transportation building roads, railways, etc. Are there any interesting things about transportation that I could talk about that the government could maybe finance?

1. Not sure, but you might want to look at the Dept of Energy when it comes to fuel. look up Us governement fuel research funding or something along those lines. Start with WEB SEARCH box right on this screen.
2. I wish they would relax our regulations and allow us to have those nice European cars that get 50-60MPG. They are cheaper than electrics and hybrids, and produce less CO2 than hybrids. They are made by Ford, Toyota, VW, Mercedes, Peugeot, Fiat, and others. They are small turbo diesels and have been in use there for years. It seems silly to me that our environmental laws make us pollute more??
