How Do I Get Financial Aid Without Any Tax Returns?

I am a junior in college and I am hoping to get financial aid. However, my parents have not filed their tax returns. I know they are dirt poor; my parents was out of work for 10 years due to serious battles with cancer. I am unemployed and just attend classes. How do I get financial aid. Should I go see a financial aid couselor?

  1. When you fill out your application for aid, two things will be asked. One, do your parents use you as a "dependent" on their tax forms. And then, two, if they do, you can mark the box that says "no tax forms will be filed for this year." Also, at the end of most all applications there is always a place where you can explain in detail any finacial hardships due to problems such as health, catastrophes etc. Good luck. It really should not be a problem.
  2. You and your parents each can file tax returns back for the previous 3 years. You and your parents may qualify to each get an ecomonic stimulus package refund from your 2007 taxes even if you did not have any earnings. It could mean up to $600 for you and up to $1200 for your parents all you need to do is file the 2007 federal tax return that you would have filed in 2008.
