Questions for sailors who live in the barracks.?

I'm a personal finance writer who writes about military issues. (http:paycheck-chronicles.military.com) As a military spouse, I've never lived in the barracks and so I don't know about the financial issues that are important to young single military members. Heck, I'm trying to write an article about laundry and I don't even know if the machines are free or if you have to pay for them. That's seriously impacting my ability to write a good article :) I would love to hear about your issues and possibly use them for future articles. You can reply here or come over to the website and hit the "Ask Kate" button. Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. The laundry facilities in the barracks are free. You only have to provide your own detergent.
  2. My husband has lived in a lot of barracks. Groton CT, Norfolk VA and I think in Pearl too. Usually each floor has laundry machines that are designated to each floor. Some barracks are brand new and some look like it is left over from WWII. No joke, Kate. My DH stayed in Dam Neck [VA] barraks, was told they had to move out 10/08 because they were tearind the buildings down in order to build new ones. The size of the room was terrible. 3 guys to a room. I would guess the room size to be 12x 25 ish...small!!! He also stayed in the barracks on Oceana [VA] and those were really nice! It was a 2 man room, shared bathroom and kitchen area and the separate rooms. Still small, but you had privacy. I don't know about Groton or Pearl. If you would like more for your story, contact me and I am sure I can get you his email.
  3. They provide washers and dryers in the barracks that are free. They don't provide enough of them. Ive lived in a barracks with 300 people That only had two washers and two dryers to use. Luckly i worked nights, so had better access in the day time, when most of the people were at work.
