What do you learn when you study finance in college?

Sounds stupid I know, but do you learn about stock trading? Or the market, or fundamental analysis? Whats it that you learn and will I definatly be a better/succesful stock market investor if I have a degree as opposed to study books and the market on my own?

  1. Not much, and what you learn - beyond the basics - may actually hurt you as you will be arguing with the market convinced that you are right and the market is wrong.
  2. A degree in finance doesnt teach you to be a retail investor. It gives you a broad overview of how individuals and companies manage and value assets and manage risk on a global basis using complex financial instruments beyond the reach of the small investor. A heavy emphasis in accounting is also important. If all you intend to do is invest in stocks then a degree is a waste of potential. .It teaches you a lot things you will never use and never have access to if you just want to pick stocks.
  3. alot of mathematical equations. id say i can compress it down to about 3 months of learning. the rest of the 3yrs and 3 quarters is mostly other subjects non related but the college supports it because it enhances your writting ability, such as writting long essays on books and stories that professors pick out on what they like. its like english- having to read some books like 3-5 and the professors dont realize that every class has a book too so its really stupid in my opinion. id rather focus on the context of writting not the content. college is like hanging out and your parents pay for it- this is my opinion on traditional colleges.
