How can you finance College visits on a fairly tight budget?

I have a single mom...trying to go from the north east to the mid atlantic area and the south....

  1. Either take a bus, or drive. Plan out cheap motels on the way out and back. Make your prospective student get a job, and use the money from that job to defray the costs. The colleges themselves may allow you to spend the visitation night in one of their dorms, so that you can see that, for a relatively inexpensive price. Bring a cooler and stop at groceries as you go, buy stuff there and eat it out of the cooler to save on food costs.
  2. You don't need to visit the school you want to apply to in order to get a sense of campus life etc. I suggest finding schools in your area that sound similar to the kind of schools your are looking at (small isolated liberal arts, large private urban, large suburban public uni, etc) and seeing how you like the atmosphere. Colleges don't require you to do on-campus interviews, they will come to you. I made my decision without ever visiting any of the schools i applied to, and i am really happy with the university i chose to attend.
