Undergrad Philosophy major?

I've been considering majors for a long time now, from digital media design to mechanical and electrical engineering, to economics, and a few others, but lately philosophy is seeming particularly attractive. I'm wondering if any people out there have anything to say about it? I've read that it teaches you valuable analytical skills, and can help you be more persuasive by teaching you how to construct good arguments based on sound logic. It's easy to see these skills leading to careers in something like law, however at this time if I did go on to graduate school, I think I would study finance. Perhaps a philosophy undergrad with a math minor? Another interesting bit of info I've heard about philosophy majors is that they're (surprisingly) in demand, and have the same employment rate as medical related majors. Anyone out their a philosophy major, or have anything to say about it? Do you think it provides a good education, or would I be better off with one of my other choices?

  1. I, like yourself had a hardtime deciding for my major. Finally I went with philosophy, mostly, for the same reasons you just stated above. I am a junior in philosophy at UCLA. I don't have any minors (although I would like to minor in management) or something business related. As you said philosophy teaches you analytical skills and how to construct a good argument (sometimes out of pure BS). Having said that, I don't want to make you think that it is easy. It is very challenging (at least for me). It requires heavy reading and writting. I totally recommand philosophy, because it is fun and challenging. The profs are usually cool and interesting people. I also recommand that you speak to a counselor at your school about the career opportunities and graduate school admission. Best of luck
