- It depends on the location of the school and whether the school is public or private. The average public school's tuition is a litttle over $16,000. The average private school is close to $35,000. Then you have to factor in whether the student is a resident or a non-resident of the state. Non-residents in public schools will pay about twice the tuition cost of a resident. There isn't much of a difference in private schools. http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/report_median.cfm?year_of_study=2007 The majority of medical students require student loans to attend school. I have never met anybody who self-funded their way through school. Although there are medical students whose parents are wealthy, the majority of students come from 'average' families. A poor student can qualify for student loans for medical school in the same manner as everybody else--a decent credit history. A decent credit history doesn't require that you have borrowed vast amounts of money. It does require that you make payments as agreed. If you haven't established a credit history on your own, doing so is fairly simple. Establishing your own credit history negates the need for a cosigner. The easiest way to establish a credit history is to purchase a secured credit card and make small purchases for about a year. A year's worth of paying on time will give you a good credit score, which is the basis for student loans.
