Is it possible to have a baby during Law School?

My partner and I were talking about having a baby and the only thing that we really disagree on is the when. I want to have a baby once I'm done with law school which is when I'm 26, soon to be 27. I'm 22 now and she doesn't really want to wait that long since she's 27 herself. I'm trying to be open minded about the time frame but I do have some concerns. Firstly, I'm wondering how a pregnancy would effect my education. I'd never have a child during 1L, but maybe 2L or 3L would be easier. Has anyone done this before? Did you have to take time off? And how did you deal with having a newborn and being a fulltime law student? Daycare, clinic duties, etc. Secondly I'm worried about finances. My partner makes around $70,000 a year but I wouldn't have an income during school. So as much as I'd like her to split childcare duties with me I know that'd be hard for her because of her schedule. And her working less wouldn't really be an option since she'd basically be the sole breadwinner.

  2. I say wait. It may be possible for you to putt it off and get through Law school and have a baby. It is certainly possible, but it would definitely put a strain on your lives, your education, your health. You have to ask yourself what is most important, to finish school as planned or have a baby because there is a huge chance you will only be able to pick one or the other. Anything could happen such as a high risk pregnancy requiring bed rest, an emergency c-section that wasn't expected requiring a much longer hospital stay and recovery. No one wishes for these things and I hope when you do have a baby everything goes perfectly, but if by chance something does go unexpectedly you will be sure to chose your health and your babys health and well-being above your education. For your sake and your familys sake, I suggest you wait. What is 5 more years? She will only be 32 and that is still young. You will have completed school and will be financially secure. As it is, daycare alone will be extremely costly. I wish you luck.
  3. Im not at law school but i am at uni. Im due to finsh the course october 2008 but im pregnant! im taking a year out from october 07 - october 08 then go back and finish in 2009 instead! its going to be hard studyin and looking after a baby as im going to be a single mum. If i could change it i would and wait till the end of my studies but it hasnt happened that way. Ive got friends who are also single parents and im arranging for one of them to look after my baby during the days when im at uni, as she doesnt want much money for doing it. Day care is expensive and i wont be able to afford it.
  4. Do not and I say again, DO NOT have a baby !!!
