Does anyone know where & how to apply for financial aid in portland oregon? specifically for single mothers?

I just moved to the portland oregon area and want to attend college but I am unsure how to get started. If anyone knows of specific loans or grants available for someone like me please let me know. Thanks in advance

  1. Go to Portland State University Department of Financial Aid. There you can speak with a financial aid counselor. They can give you information on how to apply for financial aid. Basically you want to start by filling out the FAFSA. www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (this is the main source for both loans and grants, all students should apply). (You can go to PSU to get this info. even if you plan on attending another school such as Portland Community College. This is true visa versa as well. Every school has a financial aid department). Also since you are a single mother go to the school you plan on attending and look into resources for single mothers. Most schools have a women's center and/or a nontraditional student center. You would qualify for both and they have LOTS of info. to help single moms.
  2. You may qualify for a federal grant after filling out a fafsa. I also took out a stafford loan. If you want to go to Portland Community College, you may still have time to get your financial aid in time for winter quarter, but you have to act fast. As for a four year college, you might have to wait until 2008 but check with the admissions advisors. Colleges have deadlines to get fafsas in and loan applications need to be approved, it takes a few months for each. Start with the FAFSA NOW. Also, check into scholarships for next year right now too.
