How Do I Apply For Financial Aid Under MY Name, NOT my parents??
I want to apply for financial aid under my name since i'm 20, not my parents. But when i go to the FAFSA website, I can't fill out the application without getting asked information about how much my parents make, and it won't let me skip the questions. Does anybody know of a website I can go to???

- Unless you are an emancipated minor, the law says that it is technically your parents who are applying for the aid, not you.
- i do not know if the laws changed but when my daughter applied for financial aid we have to summit tax returns even tho she was living on her own but was under the age of 25.
- Unfortunately, if you're under the age of 23 I believe you HAVE to put down your parents' information. When I was a junior in college my parents moved out of the state, but I stayed. When I spoke to a financial aid advisor at my school they told me there was no way for me to get around it even tho I had a different address than my parents and was essentially independent at that point. Sorry, but I think it'll be pretty difficult to get around it =(
- You will have to continue to include your parent's income on your FAFSA application until you turn 24. In order to receive Federal Financial Aid you must include your parent's income on your application even if you have declared yourself as independent up until you are 24 years of age. If you have decent credit and a co-signer you could apply for Private or Personal Student Loans, but I would advise against that until you have exhausted all of you Federal Financial Aid options. - Federal regulations say anyone under the age of 24 that is unmarried, doesn't have kids they support or a bachelors degree, is not a veteran or an orphan or was not a ward of the court until the age of 18 or has to report their parents income information. It does not matter where you live, who claims who on what tax form, or even if your parents are or do help you financially. No way around it. Everyone has to put parents info down until then.
