- Other than scholarships and grants directly from the school, your child can get a few pretty standardized sources from the government without any sort of credit at all. In these cases, the student is often the one who the burden is on to repay the loan. However, the loan amounts are directly related to your family's financial situation; they are need-based. The ones I received to fund school were the Pell Grant (straight up money), the Stafford Loan, which can be subsidized (you don't have to pay interest at all until several months after graduation) or unsubsidized (interest accrues throughout school), and the Federal Perkins Loan (though I believe the Bush Administration is eliminating this loan).
