Why would nobles finance fleets to go to America (like Talbot of Winthrop Fleet, from Duke Talbot)?
Here was my original question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070729164117AAWPsq8 Now, why would the noble Talbots finance a boat going to America? Did any of their family go (and make money possibly)? Is that when the first Talbot came over?

- It would have been an investment like anything else. "Whoa...the Spanish are getting phat lewt from the American gold and silver mines! Maybe we can strike it rich too!"
- Greed. Greed. Greed. They would be paid to take people to the Americas - i.e. Puritans, criminals and other undesirables, and supplies for these folks and then they would return to England with raw materials which England was in desperate need of. The "noble Talbots" were in it for the money - as much of the World has always been run. Look at the slave trade -- primarily English ships, captains, crew - buy slaves from white slavers in West Africa, bring them over here and sell them. Make money - most of the time. Should the ship (and her crew) survive - load up with raw materials from the Colonies and return to England with a boatload of sh-t which they would then sell and make more MONEY!! Leave England - go to West Africa - etc. etc.
