I do not have money for a down payment, however, I do have more than enough for closing costs. I was wondering if it would be advantageous to take out equity on the one home for the 20% down payment on the second home. Do mortgage companies frown upon this action, or is it encouraged? Would I get advantageous interest rates in this case, or similar rates as to doing 100% financing? Just so you know, the home I am looking to purchase is a duplex, however, it will be a primary residence. I know interest rates are generally higher for duplexes. Need help finding financing for multi home property? My wife and I have found a really nice home that we want to buy. The problem is there is another smaller home on the property. The seller is the executor of the estate and is not allowed to split the property. Which is fine because we intended on renting the smaller home out once we had bought the property. Purchasing an investment home for rental? I am 25 years old and just purchased my first condominium in Portland, OR. Just received my first statement on the second mortgage and it shows a finance charge that is ADDED to the balance. I arranged this mortgage through a mortgage broker, she never mentioned anything about these finance charges. The stock charts reflect old data from when I last looked at them even after a refresh. How do I fix this? Clearing cookies and deleting files (under tools, internet options...) fixes the problem but then when I go back, say an hour later, I get the old chart. Refresh fixes the problem for about 2 seconds and then the old data reappears. This same thing is happening with the chart of the Dow Jones Averages on the Yahoo Finance home page. Financing skeptical on how process is going? We are almost complete with our re-finance on our home. We are in an ARM right now that is currently up to %10. The new deal will be %8.125 fixed. We just built an entire second floor. I replaced every single, door, window, pipe, fixture, siding, boiler, new decks, swimming pool, hot tub etc etc. Thier appraiser basically appraised my house $50k higher than before I did anything. My house doubled in size. I went from 2 bedrooms to 4 bedrooms. Long story longer, the appraiser showed up and stayed for about 15 minutes. He didnt look in the garage or at it for that matter, he listed on the final appraisal that it was a 3 bedroom. He listed 200 feet of road frontage when we have 900. There were many discrepancies and omissions. When we informed them they said at this late in the application process the errors wont change the value enough to change our numbers much. Lots of 12:00 surprises it seems. Anything to worry about?

I took about $900 more than than I needed (the closing costs had been overestimated if you can believe that). I know I can rollover the $900 back into the IRA to avoid the 10% early distribution penalty. Where will the property market be in 3 years time ? I have seen two property corrections in my lifetime, 1972 and 1989. Everything is cyclical and I feel we are due for another bumpy ride. Okay here it is, don't be too harsh on me about my sh it grammar and spelling stills Conflict I was on vacation, not a care in the world or thats what it should have been but with my crazy family that just isn't a possible reality. It was a big family trip with me, my sister Elaine,her boyfriend Matt, My sister Yvonne, her finance Steven, my nephew Leo, their son and my other two nephews Scott and cooper who live with me, my mum,dad, my big brother Alan and my little sister Rachel who of course where all on the holiday as well. Yeah that was a lot of us, and for there not to be one fight would be absorb but I never expected such a big strop and in the funny way it would come about. There was a lot of tension before we had even went on vacation, so yeah we were off to a flying start. It was the 22 of September, 2007, Saturday. The 6th day into the holiday. The day started out normal. We hanged around the villa for a while, waiting on Matt and my dad to come back from their daily golf morning that, they went on everyday because it was so cheap. Anyway when we came out it was strangely dark. We met my folks and went back to the van where the rest of the gang was. I could tell that it had been raining from the ground but nether less it was still warm. As me and Rachel got into the van we received warm welcome of screaming to hurry up. I thought , only this could happen to us. Steven and Matt went to the police station to see if they had a locksmith or anything that could break into the van. Whilst they were away my nephew Scott started to misbehave, only adding irritation to an already bad situation. When Steven and Matt came back, it was northing but bad news. The police could do northing to help us. The police had told Matt and Steven they couldn't break into the car because they would, then be braking the law by breaking into the car. My dad came up with the cootest ideas . He asked if anyone had anything straight like a ruler so that he could disconnect the lock. I thought, why would any of us be carrying a ruler? As the night grew on I began to wonder away with my sister to places that were still open. Going back to Elaine, Yvonne, and my mum who were all sitting with the kids, to cheek up on the latest news. I so far had heard that someone who had saw we needed help, had a brother who was a locksmith and had went to get him. That was hope but Steven started to grow paranoid and pointed out how a guy in his car had been sitting there for ages, we thought that he was waiting on us to get a taxi home, so that he could steal the car. Our paranoia and tiredness was growing by the second. I felt okay though and thought best to make something good out of a bad situation by buying myself and Ice cream cone. An hour had passed and we were still stranded, everything was beginning to close. We were all becoming rattie and argumentative with each other. The other thing was that the person who said that her brother was a locksmith had failed to return and that added to us that someone wanted to steal the van. The place that was once buzzing with excitement and laughter was now a ghost town full of paranoia and strain. There was a lot of tension between us and we were growing tired of the whole situation. The guys were probably the most fed up, and were moaning at us to get a taxi home with the children because the place was getting very quiet and the guy who Steven had pointed out earlier who had been in his car for ages was still in his car. We were scared that this guy was going to mug us. I was just beginning to fed up with the whole situation . Steven started to argue with my mother about Leo being in his bed because he would get moanie. To me Leo looked happy, if not the happiest out of us all. Steven had told my mother that if he freaking wanted his son home he wanted his son home, after she had politely told him, that she thought leo looked okay to her. I was really bugged off by Steven because I thought why should we go home when he won't? I mean Leo is his son. I thought if Steven wants leo in his bed. Why doesn't he just get a taxi home with Yvonne and leave us alone. However in an attempt to avoid further confrontation and being bugged by the taxi services, who had been asking if we wanted a taxi home all night, we decided to get a taxi home. But with my family things just don't go that plain and simple. When we had all settled in the taxi my dad had came rushing up to the taxi saying you can take him freaking home because I'm leaving him. I remember Steven coming up to the taxi door. I remember my mum telling him to get in the taxi. Steven didn't reply to this to kindly and shouted in a frustrated manner I'm not freaking coming in, to add effect he slammed the door and marched off. Taking Leo with her she got out the taxi to go and find Steven. I remember feeling scared for leo and Yvonne. My instincts were screaming to chase after her. I confronted my thoughts with my sister, Rachel about not being in the mood to go home, she agreed with me but said that there was northing we could do about it or for that matter the situation. I nodded in agreement and acknowledged the fact that she was right in what she had said . As we were in the middle of the taxi journey, my dad phoned to say that they had finally got the car open and that they where on there way home and that Steven had calmed down and would be coming home too. Question re. a second mortgage? My husband and I bought our first home in May of 2006. We have been trying to refinance but are having problems because 1) we have not paid enough of the balance down yet and 2) it is a manufactured home. Recently we ran into some personal problems which require some extra cash that we do not have. I called our credit union where we already have a personal loan out and have not been late at all. They told me our best bet would be a second mortgage and we could roll our personal loan into this. My husband thinks this is a terrible idea. I am not the best with finance matters of this sort. My main question is: will having a second mortgage make it harder to refinance, because we really need to do that at some point, we have an ARM and need a fixed rate. Please, any advice appreciated!

Home buyer backed out, on a whim.. can I sue? In BC Canada: buyer eager to purchase multiple homes in area, approached me, offered to buy my place, escalating price 3x. Second offer in writing, signed. The *only* contingency was financing. Money was not an issue, evidenced by the many homes he purchased in my area. After a few months of his efforts to buy, i ok'd the deal privately, countering his offer by email as we had been routinely emailing. He quickly accepted. I did not ask for a deposit due to all his efforts (my mistake). I found a new home, got an accepted offer via an agent, with contingencies. Within 1 hour of my buyer knowing i had an accepted offer elsewhere, he calls and tells me his brother was not happy with the deal he accepted days ago, and cancelled. I feel he needs to prove his only contingency, financing. I asked for reasonable effort: 3 banks and the official responses, all which will be shown in court. Do i have a case? and can i sue to help the other affected folks (seller's agent etc)? The contract is exceeding simple: His signed offer to buy was subject only to financing. No time limits, no expiration date, no home inspection, nothing. Essentially it said: "I will buy your home for $xxx subject to me getting financing". This man and his family have bought many homes in the neighbourhood, financing is apparently not a problem. My perspective: the cancellation was calculated. Knowing i *had* to move, *had* to sell to get my financing, my belief is that this was purely a move to get me to a lower price. He agreed to my only counter-offer of the entire deal within an hour. Consolidation loan for more than the value of my home? A financial institution has made an offer to combine all of my credit card debt ($35,000), my mortgage ($120,000) and my second mortgage ($29,000) for a total loan value of $184,000. I believe that my home is only valued around 165,000-170,000. The offer is for a 15 year loan at 8.89% APR. (My current mortgage is 6% and the second mortgage is 6.4%). It would only reduce my monthly payments by a couple hundred dollars, but the thought of having my home paid for in 15years is appealing. They are charging a pre-paid finance charge of $7400, which I really don't understand. They are adding that to the value of the loan making the total principal to be $194,000. I am really leaning towards going forward on this, but would really appreciate any advice. I am a little uneasy about the fact they are offering the loan for more than the value of my house. I realize that I will have to change my spending habits and get rid of my credit cards or this is useless. Thanks!

Working Mum or stay at home Mum, what would you do? Ok this is my story, I had a baby in sept and am due back to work next month. This is my second and with my first child I worked and regretted it,missing things like first steps, words, teeth etc and swore with this one I wouldnt go back to work so soon. Then in December my partners job became unstable and I got offered a job with a large company for a pretty sum of money. How could I refuse with our finances looking bleak. I took the job to start in feb and then set about looking for a nursery for the kids. Its gunna cost me a small fortune to put them in nursery leaving me with no money after paying fees. My older boy starts pre school in sept and a friend can childmind for me as soon as the baby turns 1. So do i stay at home and enjoy my kids until then or do i go to work and never see them? what would you do?

how do i tell my story to the world? To all this may concern: I write to you in hopes that you can help me tell my story that ruined my life for the simple fact that I was of Arab descent. I am first generation American whose parents are Palestinians; my name is Eyad Shalash. The United States Federal Government appallingly took my freedom and all that was familiar to me in seconds--only to dismiss the case days before trial and with absolutely no apology. I whole heartedly believe I was a victim of racial profiling. I never had anticipated myself ever having to write anyone the way I am now. I was a senior at University of South Carolina, on the Life Scholarship, double majoring in international business and finance. I held the esteem position of being on the Dean's List for the three semesters prior to my senior year, as well. The Charges that were brought against me from the Federal Government was that of a sealed indictment, so at the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on. In fact, I thought it was a sick joke because I knew myself one not to mess with anything remotely illegal---moreover, a sealed indictment? I felt as if I was being treated like a member of Al-Qaieda. Maybe because of my Arab descent, they felt that I was a danger to homeland security? Sadly, I'll never know. Anyway, I suffered major losses. One that hit home was losing my internship with Merrill Lynch because of the farce of an ongoing investigation into which they were pouring useless energy. The following which I will explain not only caused me to suffer with my education and career but nearly caused my mother a stroke. The ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm agency) in ways I'll never understand accused my older brother and I for selling crack cocaine and ecstasy with sentences that reached twenty to life. It was 2005 and supposedly their whole investigation started the beginning of 2002---only a few months after the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Buildings. They shackled my brother as if he was a serial killer and told me to turn myself in or they'll have to take me in. Not knowing, at the time, what the possible problem could be, I obliged. I never believed in the Land of the Free, the land of justice and liberty for all, that i would be fighting for my innocence. Only Two weeks from trial, my lawyer informed me that the case was dismissed. Overjoyed, at first, I was. Only to become so infuriated that I became severely ill and had a dangerously high fever. Thoughts rushed through my head, why should I be happy to get my freedom back? It should not have been taken away from me in the first place! Yet, I did not even get back all my freedom. It has been nearly a year from the day I was accused of all this and still unemployed today because everywhere I apply, I get rejected once they do a background check on me. After all this, one would think the Government would at least take everything off my record that they placed. I have become cynical in the sense of why would the Government go through the hassle of cleaning up their own mess--I am nothing in their eyes. The Government still has their mark on my "criminal" history record. I was robbed of everything that I accomplished and no apology given. My education was everything I had. Each day in school was like a brick that I used to build my house of success, and once I reached placing the roof of my house, a bulldozer comes and demolishes the years of hard work in seconds. On top of that, they take the bricks with them hindering my ability to even start again. I was fortunate enough that my family had the money for the lawyer that we had, but we lost over one hundred thousand dollars to them, along with all my dreams and hopes of ever working for a big corporation. Yes, I live in the USA, the country that gives you the most freedom in the world and the country that can rip them away in a split second even if they just do it by mistake. I feel my life is hopeless now. All my dreams of success have now all faded away. I sometimes regret waking up in the morning, jobless at the age of 23 with a college degree. All I ask is for some help or at least for a finger pointing me in the right direction where I can get help. Or at the least, an apology to give me hope in this country once more. Wife ran 60k in credit cars and 20k in home equity? What to do? Last week I was looking into refinance our home. Little did I know after talking to the lender I found out that my wife has 5 credit cards with a total of 60k in debt and has taken 20k home equity. This is the 4th time we go trough the same issue but this time she ran wild. First time was about 4k second was 9k third was 17k and we always managed to pay them off and move on. After the third incident I asked her to cut all credit cards but she assured me it will never happen again. We been married for 24 years she hides things and lays to me about her finances I really want to get out of this marriage but we have three kids, 18, 17 and 11. Any advice will appreciated.

With the tight credit market, can you still get a mortgage by only putting 5% down with good credit above 750? Main question is if you can still finance at home purchase by getting a second loan for say 15% + the first loan of 80% (to avoid PMI). Also in this example by putting 5% down. How exactly do Section 502 Rural Housing Loans subsidize a monthly mortgage payment? Im looking into obtaining a section 502 rural housing loan from the USDA for low-income people. I have researched some of the usda's info but cant find answers to my specific questions. My questions involves the repayment ratio, amount of mortgage financed, and subsidy. From what I understand, the income and debt of the household is used to determine the amount of the mortgage that the program gives to you - so that the mortgage, taxes, insurance, and interest will be no greater than 30% of the total income. What is confusing me is this: first, I dont understand where the subsidy comes in - does the govt subsidize the payment so that it will be less than 30% of income, or are you only allowed to buy a home if the payment is 30% of income. Second, using 30% of my total household income towards a mortgagae payment would never let me buy a home in my area, where the cheapest house costs $300,000. So can someone please clarify these questions and the program basics. Thanks!!

Does my friend need help - if so how can I help her to get a life? Or should I not interfere? I have a friend who is 62 years old. She was a professional in broadcasting until she retired early about seven years ago. She has never married and has never had a boyfriend or girlfriend (“partner”) of any sort - she does have quite a few platonic friends like me but she has always lived alone. Through shrewd management of her finances my friend now has property and other assets worth well in excess of a million pounds as well as a good pension. She owns two apartments in a high value area of England and lives in one and lets the other. The lady is generous to others but unbelievably mean to herself. How do I evict a roommate? I am the home owner and allowed a "friend" to move in. I also financed his truck because he was unable to obtain credit. The truck is in my name only. The verbal agreement was $147.50 a week. This covered his rent, truck payment, insurance, and cell phone (second line on my account). He also doesn't have a checking account. This is a platonic relationship and I just thought I was helping a guy get back on his feet. They say you don't know someone until you live with them. Boy is that the truth. Turns out my friend has a nasty little drug problem. I have asked for the keys to the truck and for him to leave several times. The eight crewmembers and 145 passengers were held for 17 days during which one of the hostages, Robert Stethem, a U.S. Navy diver, was murdered. After being flown twice to Algiers, the aircraft returned to Beirut and the hostages were released. Later on, four Hizballah members were secretly indicted. One of them, the Hizballah senior officer Imad Mughniyah, was indicted in absentia. October 7, 1985, Between Alexandria, Egypt and Haifa, Israel. A four-member PFLP squad took over the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, as it was sailing from Alexandria, Egypt, to Israel. The squad murdered a disabled U.S. citizen, Leon Klinghoffer, by throwing him in the ocean. Four terrorists from Abu Nidal's organization attacked El Al offices at the Leonardo di Vinci Airport in Rome. Thirteen people, including five Americans, were killed and 74 wounded, among them two Americans. The terrorists had come from Damascus and were supported by the Syrian regime. March 30, 1986, Athens, Greece. A bomb exploded on a TWA flight from Rome as it approached Athens airport. The attack killed four U.S. citizens who were sucked through a hole made by the blast, although the plane safely landed. The bombing was attributed to the Fatah Special Operations Group's intelligence and security apparatus, headed by Abdullah Abd al-Hamid Labib, alias Colonel Hawari. Hizballah later claimed they killed Higgins. December 21, 1988, Lockerbie, Scotland. Pan Am Flight 103 departing from Frankfurt to New York was blown up in midair, killing all 259 passengers and another 11 people on the ground in Scotland. Two Libyan agents were found responsible for planting a sophisticated suitcase bomb onboard the plane. On 14 November 1991, arrest warrants were issued for Al-Amin Khalifa Fahima and Abdel Baset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi. After Libya refused to extradite the suspects to stand trial, the United Nations leveled sanctions against the country in April 1992, including the freezing of Libyan assets abroad. In 1999, Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi agreed to hand over the two suspects, but only if their trial was held in a neutral country and presided over by a Scottish judge. With the help of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, Al-Megrahi and Fahima were finally extradited and tried in Camp Zeist in the Netherlands. Megrahi was found guilty and jailed for life, while Fahima was acquitted due to a "lack of evidence" of his involvement. After the extradition, UN sanctions against Libya were automatically lifted. Three organizations were believed to be responsible for the attack: The January 15 organization, which had sent a letter bomb to the Israeli ambassador to London in January; the Egyptian Revolutionary Organization that from out 1984-1986 carried out attacks against U.S. and Israeli targets; and the Nasserite Organization, which had attacked British and American targets in 1988. June 12, 1989, Bosphorus Straits, Turkey. A bomb exploded aboard an unoccupied boat used by U.S. consular staff. The explosion caused extensive damage but no casualties. An organization previously unknown, the Warriors of the June 16th Movement, claimed responsibility for the attack. October 11, 1989, Izmir, Turkey. An explosive charge went off outside a U.S. military PX. Dev Sol was held responsible for the attack. February 7, 1991, Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. Dev Sol members shot and killed a U.S. civilian contractor as he was getting into his car at the Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey. February 28, 1991, Izmir, Turkey. Two Dev Sol gunmen shot and wounded a U.S. Air Force officer as he entered his residence in Izmir. March 28, 1991, Jubial, Saudi Arabia. Three U.S. marines were shot at and injured by an unknown terrorist while driving near Camp Three, Jubial. No organization claimed responsibility for the attack. October 28, 1991, Ankara, Turkey. Victor Marwick, an American soldier serving at the Turkish-American base, Tuslog, was killed and his wife wounded in a car bomb attack. The Turkish Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. October 28, 1991, Istanbul, Turkey. Two car bombings killed a U.S. Air Force sergeant and severely wounded an Egyptian diplomat in Istanbul. Turkish Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. November 8, 1991, Beirut, Lebanon. A 100-kg car bomb destroyed the administration building of the American University in Beirut, killing one person and wounding at least a dozen. October 12, 1992, Umm Qasr, Iraq. A U.S. soldier serving with the United Nations was stabbed and wounded near the port of Umm Qasr. No organization claimed responsibility for the attack. January 25, 1993, Virginia, United States. A Pakistani gunman opened fire on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees standing outside of the building. Two agents, Frank Darling and Bennett Lansing, were killed and three others wounded. The assailant was never caught and reportedly fled to Pakistan. February 26, 1993, Cairo, Egypt. A bomb exploded inside a café in downtown Cairo killing three. Among the 18 wounded were two U.S. citizens. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. February 26, 1993, New York, United States. A massive van bomb exploded in an underground parking garage below the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six and wounding 1,042. Four Islamist activists were responsible for the attack. Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, the operation's alleged mastermind, escaped but was later arrested in Pakistan and extradited to the United States. Abd al-Hakim Murad, another suspected conspirator, was arrested by local authorities in the Philippines and handed over to the United States. The two, along with two other terrorists, were tried in the U.S. and sentenced to 240 years. April 14, 1993, Kuwait. The Iraqi intelligence service attempted to assassinate former U.S. President George Bush during a visit to Kuwait. In retaliation, the U.S. launched a cruise missile attack two months later on the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. July 5, 1993, Southeast Turkey. In eight separate incidents, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) kidnapped a total of 19 Western tourists traveling in southeastern Turkey. Two unidentified gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles opened fire on a U.S. Consulate van in Karachi, killing two U.S. diplomats, Jacqueline Keys Van Landingham and Gary C. Durell, and wounding a third, Mark McCloy. April 9, 1995, Kfar Darom and Netzarim, Gaza Strip. Two suicide attacks were carried out within a few hours of each other in Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip. In the first attack a suicide bomber crashed an explosive-rigged van into an Israeli bus in Netzarim, killing eight including U.S. citizen Alisa Flatow, 20, of West Orange, NJ. More than 30 others were injured. In the second attack, a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in the midst of a convoy of cars in Kfar Darom, injuring 12. The Palestine Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Shaqaqi Faction claimed responsibility for the attacks. U.S. citizens Chava Levine and Seth Klein were injured. June 15, 1995: Jerusalem, Israel. U.S. citizen Howard Tavens of Cleveland, OH was injured in a stabbing attack. July 4, 1995, Kashmir, India. In Kashmir, a previously unknown militant group, Al-Faran, with suspected links to a Kashmiri separatist group in Pakistan, took hostage six tourists, including two U.S. citizens. They demanded the release of Muslim militants held in Indian prisons. One of the U.S. citizens escaped on July 8, while on August 13 the decapitated body of the Norwegian hostage was found along with a note stating that the other hostages also would be killed if the group's demands were not met. The Indian Government refused. Both Indian and American authorities believe the rest of the hostages were most likely killed in 1996 by their jailers. August 1995, Istanbul, Turkey. A bombing of Istanbul's popular Taksim Square injured two U.S. citizens. This attack was part of a three-year-old attempt by the PKK to drive foreign tourists away from Turkey by striking at tourist sites. August 21, 1995, Jerusalem, Israel. A bus bombing in Jerusalem by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) killed four, including American Joan Davenny of New Haven, CT, and wounded more than 100. U.S. citizens injured: Chanoch Bleier, Judith Shulewitz, Bernard Batta. September 9, 1995. Ma'ale Michmash. American killed: Unborn child of Mrs. Mara Frey of Chicago. Mara Frey was injured. November 9, 1995, Algiers, Algeria. Islamic extremists set fire to a warehouse belonging to the U.S. Embassy, threatened the Algerian security guard because he was working for the United States, and demanded to know whether any U.S. citizens were present. The Armed Islamic Group (GIA) probably carried out the attacks. The group had threatened to strike other foreign targets and especially U.S. objectives in Algeria, and the attack's style was similar to past GIA operations against foreign facilities. November 13, 1995, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A car bomb exploded in the parking lot outside of the Riyadh headquarters of the Office of the Program Manager/Saudi Arabian National Guard, killing seven persons, five of them U.S. citizens, and wounding 42. The blast severely damaged the three-story building, which houses a U.S. military advisory group, and several neighboring office buildings. Three groups -- the Islamic Movement for Change, the Tigers of the Gulf, and the Combatant Partisans of God -- claimed responsibility for the attack. February 25, 1996, Jerusalem, Israel. A suicide bomber blew up a commuter bus in Jerusalem, killing 26, including three U.S. citizens, and injuring 80 others, among them three other U.S. citizens. Hamas claimed responsibility for the bombing. U. S. citizens killed: Sara Duker, of Teaneck, NJ, Matthew Eisenfeld of West Hartford, CT, Ira Weinstein of Bronx, NY. U.S. citizens injured: Beatrice Kramer, Steven Lapides, and Leah Stein Mousa. March 4, 1996, Tel Aviv, Israel. A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside the Dizengoff Center, Tel Aviv's largest shopping mall, killing 20 persons and injuring 75 others, including two U.S. citizens. Both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombing. U.S. citizens injured included Julie K. Negrin of Seattle, WA. May 13, 1996, Beit-El, West Bank. Arab gunmen opened fire on a hitchhiking stand near Beit El, wounding three Israelis and killing David Boim, 17, an American-Israeli from New York. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, although either the Islamic Jihad or Hamas are suspected. U.S. citizens injured: Moshe Greenbaum, 17. June 9, 1996, outside Zekharya. Yaron Ungar, an American-Israeli, and his Israeli wife were killed in a drive-by shooting near their West Bank home. The PFLP is suspected. June 25, 1996, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. A fuel truck carrying a bomb exploded outside the U.S. military's Khobar Towers housing facility in Dhahran, killing 19 U.S. military personnel and wounding 515 persons, including 240 U.S. personnel. Several groups claimed responsibility for the attack. In June 2001, a U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, identified Saudi Hizballah as the party responsible for the attack. The court indicated that the members of the organization, banned from Saudi Arabia, "frequently met and were trained in Lebanon, Syria, or Iran" with Libyan help. August 17, 1996, Mapourdit, Sudan. Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) rebels kidnapped six missionaries in Mapourdit, including a U.S citizen. The SPLA released the hostages on August 28. November 1, 1996, Sudan. A breakaway group of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA) kidnapped three workers of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), including one U.S citizen. The rebels released the hostages on December 9 in exchange for ICRC supplies and a health survey of their camp. December 3, 1996, Paris, France. A bomb exploded aboard a Paris subway train, killing four and injuring 86 persons, including a U.S. citizen. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but Algerian extremists are suspected. January 2, 1997, Major cities worldwide, United States. A series of letter bombs with Alexandria, Egypt postmarks were discovered at Al-Hayat newspaper bureaus in Washington, DC, New York, London, and Riyadh. Three similar devices, also postmarked in Egypt, were found at a prison facility in Leavenworth, Kansas. Bomb disposal experts defused all the devices, but one detonated at the Al-Hayat newspaper office in London, injuring two security guards and causing minor damage. February 23, 1997, New York, United States. A Palestinian gunman opened fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State building in New York, killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claimed this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine." July 30, 1997, Jerusalem, Israel. Two bombs detonated in Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda market, killing 15 persons, including a U.S. citizen and wounding 168 others, among them two U.S. citizens. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack. October 30, 1997, Sanaa, Yemen. Al-Sha'if tribesmen kidnapped a U.S. businessman near Sanaa. The tribesmen sought the release of two fellow tribesmen who were arrested on smuggling charges and several public works projects they claim the government promised them. The hostage was released on November 27. November 12, 1997, Karachi, Pakistan. Two unidentified gunmen shot to death four U.S. auditors from Union Texas Petroleum and their Pakistani driver as they drove away from the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi. Two groups claimed responsibility -- the Islamic Inqilabi Council, or Islamic Revolutionary Council and the Aimal Secret Committee, also known as the Aimal Khufia Action Committee. November 25, 1997, Aden, Yemen. Yemenite tribesmen kidnapped a U.S citizen, two Italians, and two unspecified Westerners near Aden to protest the eviction of a tribe member from his home. The kidnappers released the five hostages on November 27. February 6, 1998, Jerusalem, Israel. Stabbing in Jerusalem. U.S. Citizen Yosef Lepon, 17 injured. April 19, 1998, Maon, Israel. Dov Driben, a 28-year-old American-Israeli farmer was killed by terrorists near the West Bank town of Maon. One of his assailants, Issa Debavseh, a member of Fatah Tanzim, was killed on November 7, 2001, by the IDF after being on their wanted list for the murder. June 21, 1998, Beirut, Lebanon. Two hand-grenades were thrown at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. No casualties were reported. June 21, 1998, Beirut, Lebanon. Three rocket-propelled grenades attached to a crude detonator exploded near the U.S. Embassy compound in Beirut, causing no casualties and little damage. August 7, 1998, Nairobi, Kenya. A car bomb exploded at the rear entrance of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The attack killed a total of 292, including 12 U.S. citizens, and injured over 5,000, among them six Americans. The perpetrators belonged to al-Qaida, Usama bin Ladin's network. August 7, 1998, Dar es Sala'am, Tanzania. A car bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Sala'am, killing 11 and injuring 86. Osama bin Laden's organization al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the attack. Two suspects were arrested. November 21, 1998, Teheran, Iran. Members of Fedayeen Islam, shouting anti-American slogans and wielding stones and iron rods, attacked a group of American tourists in Tehran. Some of the tourists suffered minor injuries from flying glass. December 28, 1998, Mawdiyah, Yemen. Sixteen tourists--12 Britons, two Americans and two Australians--were taken hostage in the largest kidnapping in Yemen's recent history. The tourists were seized in the Abyan province (some 175 miles south of Sanaa the capital). One Briton and a Yemeni guide escaped, while the rest were taken to city of Mawdiyah. Four hostages were killed when troops closed in and two were wounded, including an American woman. The kidnappers, members of the Islamic Army of Aden-Abyan, an offshoot of Al-Jihad, had demanded the release from jail of their leader, Saleh Haidara al-Atwi. October 31, 1999, Nantucket, Massachusetts, United States. EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed off the U.S. coast killing all 217 people on board, including 100 Americans. Although it is not precisely clear what happened, evidence indicated that an Egyptian pilot crashed the plane for personal or political reasons. November 4, 1999, Athens, Greece. A group protesting President Clinton's visit to Greece hid a gas bomb at an American car dealership in Athens. Two cars were destroyed and several others damaged. Anti-State Action claimed responsibility for the attack, but the November 17 group was also suspected. November 12, 1999, Islamabad, Pakistan. Six rockets were fired at the U.S. Information Services cultural center and United Nations offices in Islamabad, injuring a Pakistani guard. September 29, 2000. near Jerusalem Israel. October 8, 2000, Nablus, West Bank. The bullet-ridden body of Rabbi Hillel Lieberman, a U.S. citizen from Brooklyn living in the Jewish settlement of Elon Moreh, was found at the entrance to the West Bank town of Nablus. Lieberman had headed there after hearing that Palestinians had desecrated the religious site, Joseph's Tomb. No organization claimed responsibility for the murder. October 12, 2000, Aden Harbor, Yemen. A suicide squad rammed the warship the U.S.S. Cole with an explosives-laden boat killing 13 American sailors and injuring 33. The attack was likely by Osama bin Ladin's al-Qaida organization. October 30, 2000, Jerusalem, Israel. Gunmen killed Eish Kodesh Gilmor, a 25-year-old American-Israeli on duty as a security guard at the National Insurance Institute in Jerusalem. The "Martyrs of the Al-Aqsa Intifada," a group linked to Fatah, claimed responsibility for the attack. Gilmor's family filed a suit in the U.S. District Court in Washington against the Palestinian Authority, the PLO, Chairman Yasser Arafat and members of Force 17, as being responsible for the attack. December 31, 2000, Ofra, Israel. Rabbi Binyamin Kahane, 34, and his wife, Talia Hertzlich Kahane, both formerly of Brooklyn, NY were killed in a drive-by shooting. Their children, Yehudit Leah Kahane, Bitya Kahane, Tzivya Kahane, Rivka Kahane, and Shlomtsion Kahane, were injured in the attack. March 28, 2001, Neve Yamin. Bombing at bus stop. Kobi Mandell, 13, of Silver Spring, MD, an American-Israeli, was found stoned to death along with a friend in a cave near the Jewish settlement of Tekoa. Two organizations, the Islamic Jihad and Hizballah-Palestine, claimed responsibility for the attack. May 29, 2001, Gush Etzion, West Bank. The Fatah Tanzim claimed responsibility for a drive-by shooting of six in the West Bank that killed two American-Israeli citizens, Samuel Berg, and his mother, Sarah Blaustein. September 11, 2001, New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania, United States. During a carefully coordinated attack, 19 Islamist extremists hijacked four U.S. jetliners and forced them to crash into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. In all, 266 people perished in the four planes, and more than 3,000 people were killed on the ground. U.S. investigators determined on the basis of extensive evidence that Usama bin Ladin's al-Qaida group was responsible for the attack. The first plane, American Airlines Flight 11 en route from Boston to Los Angeles, crashed into the World Trade Center's north tower at 8:48 a.m. Eighteen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175, also headed from Boston to Los Angeles, smashed into the World Trade Center's south tower. This is the question Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s camp is asking about Sen. Barack Obama. An investigation of Mr. Obama by political opponents within the Democratic Party has discovered that Mr. Obama was raised as a Muslim by his stepfather in Indonesia. Sources close to the background check, which has not yet been released, said Mr. Obama, 45, spent at least four years in a so-called Madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia. "He was a Muslim, but he concealed it," the source said. "His opponents within the Democrats hope this will become a major issue in the campaign." When contacted by Insight, Mr. Obama’s press secretary said he would consult with “his boss” and call back. He did not. Sources said the background check, conducted by researchers connected to Senator Clinton, disclosed details of Mr. Obama's Muslim past. The sources said the Clinton camp concluded the Illinois Democrat concealed his prior Muslim faith and education. "The background investigation will provide major ammunition to his opponents," the source said. "The idea is to show Obama as deceptive." In two best-selling autobiographies—"The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" and "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance"—Mr. Obama, born in Honolulu where his parents met, mentions but does not expand on his Muslim background, alluding only to his attendance at a "predominantly Muslim school." The sources said the young Obama was given the name Hussein by his Muslim father, which the Illinois Democrat rarely uses in public. His father was black and came from Kenya. Mr. Obama’s mother, the daughter of a farmer, came from Wichita, Kansas. Mr. Obama's parents divorced when he was two years old. His father returned to Kenya. Later, Mr. Obama's mother married an Indonesian student and the family moved to Jakarta. Mr. Obama returned to Hawaii when he was 10 to live with his maternal grandparents. The sources said the background check concerned Mr. Obama's years in Jakarta. In Indonesia, the young Obama was enrolled in a Madrassa and was raised and educated as a Muslim. Although Indonesia is regarded as a moderate Muslim state, the U.S. intelligence community has determined that today most of these schools are financed by the Saudi Arabian government and they teach a Wahhabi doctrine that denies the rights of non-Muslims. Although the background check has not confirmed that the specific Madrassa Mr. Obama attended was espousing Wahhabism, the sources said his Democratic opponents believe this to be the case—and are seeking to prove it. The sources said the opponents are searching for evidence that Mr. Obama is still a Muslim or has ties to Islam. Mr. Obama attends services at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago’s South Side. However, he is not known to be a regular parishioner. "Obama's education began a life-long relationship with Islam as a faith and Muslims as a community," the source said. "This has been a relationship that contains numerous question marks." The sources said Mr. Obama spent at least four years in a Muslim school in Indonesia. They said when Mr. Obama was 10, his mother and her second husband separated. She and her son returned to Hawaii. "Then the official biography begins," the source said. "Obama never returned to Kenya to see relatives or family until it became politically expedient." In both of his autobiographies, Mr. Obama characterizes himself as a Christian—although he describes his upbringing as mostly secular. In “The Audacity of Hope,” Mr. Obama says, "I was not raised in a religious household." He describes his mother as secular, but says she had copies of the Bible, the Koran and the Bhagavad Gita in their home. Mr. Obama says his father was "raised a Muslim, but by the time he met my mother he was a confirmed atheist...." Mr. Obama also describes his father as largely absent from his life. He says his Indonesian stepfather was "skeptical" about religion and "saw religion as not particularly useful in the practical business of making one's way in the world ...." In the book, Mr. Obama briefly addresses his education in Indonesia. How do you deal with pregnancy depression? Since I have been pregnant I have decided to give up my career in the Army since my husband is in and be a mom. Well that means a big life change. Now I'm on strict bed-rest due to pre-term labor and am staying home all day, bored out of my mind and the stress keeps pilling on. I've had a car wreck my back can't heal due to the weight of my belly, my truck is messing up, my finances are going crazy, my husband is leaving for Iraq possibly before the baby is born, I got bit by a spider and my leg is all swollen and it hurts to walk, and on and on. Now I spend all the time I have with my husband fighting over stupid things and it is really starting to get to me. I feel so lost and worried and sad. I know I need to do something to keep from losing it, but I don't know what. I want to be able to love my husband every second he is here, but I can't help the rage and uselessness I feel inside. Does a mortgage company have the right to charge you for a home appraisel? I have been working with a mortagage company for over a month, trying desperately to get out of an ajdustable rate mortgage I currently have. They lead me on week after week how close they were to closing. The only problem they said was they weren't happy with the appraisel, so he sent a second appraiser to my house. After about 5 weeks, he sent me an email stating that he couldn't re-finance me, given the way the market is, and I owe too much on the house. The true shocker was when he said I needed to send him a check for $700 to cover the 2 appraisels. I was horrified, and said to him that it seems like a scam because he never mentioned any cost to me, ever. He never answers my questions directly when I ask him why, (such as why did he send 2 appraisers, fed me lines for weeks, and never mentioned cost to me) yet says he will sent me to collections and it will ruin my credit. Was I possibly scammed? How do I handle this? Thanks so much for your advice.
